Proof of qualifications for qualified candidates and to work as a sole charge nanny you need to have a least 2 years experience, otherwise you are likely to be working alongside mum until more experience has be gained. This together with experience will determine your role and salary scale in employment.

Nanny Guidelines
As a nanny your role is to primarily take care of the children in your charge and stimulate them by arranging varied actives both at home and outdoors such as activity classes - music play gyms, park trips, zoo outings and farms. Play dates with friends. Reading stories at home and messy play arts and crafts are just a few examples. Additionally a nanny will be expected to undertake what is called nursery duties or childcare related chores, cooking, shopping, laundry tidying play areas and rooms. Also to tidy up the kitchen and any other areas of the home used throughout the day. All of which should be agreed in a contract at the start of employment, along with hours pay holidays and any baby-sitting so as not to create any miss understandings.
Nursery Nurse Guidelines
Working in Nurseries has a very different role as a nanny. They will vary in size from say 20 place to 150 place nursery. Some are privately owned and other are part of a large chain of nurseries. There are usually different rooms divided into the different age ranges - Baby Room covering from 3 months - 12months. Toddlers 12mths - 2yrs. 2-3years Room 3-5years Room each nursery may work slightly differently depending upon the size and number of children. They are open around 50 week a year closed at Christmas and Easter.
Each nursery will normally consist of a Manager and a Deputy who will be responsible for running the nursery and in each room there will be a Room Leader and a few Nursery Nurses again depending on the number of children. The layouts will vary but everybody works as part of a team led by the room leader to provide a fun stimulating safe environment for the children. You will start off as a Nursery Nurse if qualified or a Nursery Assistant if unqualified with the opportunity to gain a qualification whilst working at the nursery or attend college part-time. Working hours can vary some nurseries open form 7.30am in the morning until 7.00pm in the evening. The majority are open from 8-6pm and offer a 40 hour working week with varied shift patterns worked one rota system. 1 hour lunch break and sometimes a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon. Holidays offered vary 15-20 days depending on the time you have worked at the nursery, plus bank holidays. Salaries range from
£10,000 - £19,000 Nursery Nurses - Room Leaders. £18,000- £28,000 Deputy - Managers. |
